Service Beyond Limits – Reaching the Unreached
The Lions Club of Kalmunai Town, in collaboration with Thirukkovil Base Hospital, successfully conducted a Free Medical Camp at Thangavelayuthapuram, a remote and underserved community in the Ampara District.
A Community Where the Need Is Real
Thangavelayuthapuram is situated approximately 15 km from Thirukkovil, with access made particularly difficult by the poor condition of the road.
Most families living in this area depend on farming for their livelihood and face significant challenges in accessing healthcare and other essential services.
The community has also been severely affected by human–elephant conflict. Repeated elephant threats and attacks have resulted in houses being abandoned, while many families have been compelled to migrate towards the Thirukkovil area.
Recognizing these circumstances, the Lions Club of Kalmunai Town identified this community as one where our service could make a meaningful difference.
???? Lions Went Where the Need Was
Our members travelled approximately 75 km from Kalmunai to Thangavelayuthapuram, not merely to conduct another project, but to reach people who face genuine barriers in accessing essential services.
Despite their demanding schedules, our distinguished guests also demonstrated an exceptional commitment to service by travelling approximately 113 km to reach the project location.
We were privileged to have:
Chief Guest:
Lion T. Athithan
First Vice District Governor – District 306 D10
Special Guest:
Lion Pushpaharan
District GST – District 306 D10
Their presence, encouragement and active participation added immense value to the programme and demonstrated the true spirit of Lionism — leadership through service.
Healthcare Brought Closer to the Community
Through our collaboration with Thirukkovil Base Hospital, the medical camp brought essential healthcare services directly to the people, reducing the burden of travelling long distances under difficult conditions.
The project brought together medical professionals, Lions and volunteers with one common purpose: to serve those who needed us most.
This initiative was not measured simply by the number of kilometres travelled or activities completed. Its true value was in reaching a vulnerable community, listening to their needs and bringing care, compassion and hope closer to their homes.
Our Commitment
At the Lions Club of Kalmunai Town, we believe that meaningful service begins with identifying the real needs of the community and reaching the truly needy — regardless of distance, difficulty or inconvenience.
We travelled beyond distance.
We crossed difficult roads.
We reached an underserved community.
And together, we served where the need was real.
Our sincere appreciation goes to the management and medical team of Thirukkovil Base Hospital, our Chief Guest, Special Guest, Lions members, volunteers, supporters and everyone who contributed to the successful implementation of this humanitarian initiative.
