Project Report – Hunger Relief Project for Katharagama Pilgrims Project Title Hunger Relief Project – Meal Distribution for Katharagama Pilgrims Project Date 10 July 2026 Project Location Vannathivettai Service Category Hunger Relief / Humanitarian Service Project Objective The primary objective of this project was to provide nutritious meals and refreshments to pilgrims undertaking the annual Katharagama pilgrimage. Recognizing the physical demands of the long journey, our Lions Club organized a comprehensive meal distribution program to ensure that pilgrims had access to wholesome food and drinking refreshments throughout the day. The project aimed to reduce hunger, promote health and well-being, and demonstrate the Lions' commitment to serving humanity with compassion. Project Description On 10 July 2026, our Lions Club successfully conducted a large-scale hunger relief initiative at Vannathivettai, a key location along the Katharagama pilgrimage route. Thousands of devotees pass through this area during their spiritual journey, often walking long distances under challenging weather conditions. To support these pilgrims, the club established a meal distribution center where volunteers prepared, organized, and served freshly cooked meals and refreshments. Approximately 2,000 pilgrims benefited from the project. The following meals were provided throughout the day: Breakfast (LKR 100.00) Lunch (LKR 200.00) Evening snacks and Tea (LKR 100.00) Dinner (LKR 200.00) The project was carefully planned to ensure timely preparation, hygienic food handling, and smooth distribution. Lions members and volunteers worked together from early morning until late evening to provide continuous service with dignity and respect to every pilgrim. Impact of the Project The hunger relief project had a significant positive impact on the pilgrims. By providing free, nutritious meals throughout the day, the project helped alleviate hunger and fatigue, enabling pilgrims to continue their spiritual journey with renewed strength and energy. Many beneficiaries expressed their appreciation for the timely assistance and warm hospitality provided by the Lions Club. The initiative also strengthened the club's relationship with the local community and reinforced the Lions motto, "We Serve."
